St. Louis turns on defense

In addition to being the St. Louis basketball team's head coach, Delbert Tengan doubles as the football team's defensive coordinator. His emphasis on defense helped carry the Crusaders to a 46-42 win over Kamehameha last night at McCabe Gym.

St. Louis used tenacious defense to open up a double-digit lead on Kamehameha, and the Crusaders held off a furious Warrior comeback to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for both teams.

"They played great defense," Kamehameha coach Darryl Gabriel said. "They play defense as well as any team in the state."

Timo Paepule led St. Louis with 13 points, while Jose Vidad came off the bench to score 10. Sean Uyehara also had 13 points for Kamehameha, 10 coming in the second half as the Warriors mounted their comeback.

St. Louis held Kamehameha to just 10 points in the first half and allowed only three in the second quarter. Uyehara's free throw and layup accounted for the Warriors' only points in the period.

"That's the game right there," Gabriel said of his team's second quarter output.

As a team Kamehameha, which played without injured point guard Pono Enos, hit just 4 of 20 attempts in the first half and 1 of 7 free throws as St. Louis took a 21-10 lead into halftime.

But Tengan was far from comfortable with the early lead.

"We told them at halftime that they're going to start hitting those shots and we have to execute better on offense," Tengan said.

St. Louis led 36-25 entering the final period, and opened up a 14-point lead on a 3-pointer by Jonah Lakatani.

But Kamehameha stayed within striking distance and cut the St. Louis lead to five at 42-37 when Nalu Perkins drained a 3-pointer with 1:15 left in the game.

After the teams traded free throws, a 3-pointer by Aaron Kahaloa drew Kamehameha even closer at 44-42. A St. Louis turnover then gave the Warriors the ball under their own basket.

But St. Louis' Bobby Tappy, one of just two seniors on the Crusader roster, stole a Warrior pass and lobbed it ahead to Jason Rivers, who was fouled. Rivers hit one of two free throws to give St. Louis a 45-42 lead with 16.8 seconds left. Rivers would hit another free throw with 13.2 seconds left to seal the win.

The Crusader victory spoiled Gabriel's return to McCabe Gym, where he spent seven seasons as St. Louis' head coach.

"Everyone was very nice and St. Louis is always special to me," he said. "But it was weird being a visitor in this gym."
