Decorations have been dismantled in many places, but the Christmas season is still being celebrated this weekend in many churches. Feast of the 3 Kings celebrated
Star-Bulletin
Tomorrow is the traditional 12th Day of Christmas, marking the Epiphany, the Feast of the Three Kings, or Magi, who brought gifts to the Christ Child.
Among the public celebrations are a fiesta sponsored by the United Puerto Rican Association of Hawaii, a sing-along vespers service at Church of the Crossroads and a free performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu.
>> In Hispanic countries where Santa Claus is a stranger, "El Dia de los Tres Reyes" is the time when children receive gifts. That tradition will be observed at the United Puerto Rican Association social hall at 1249 N. School St.
The celebration will begin with a noon Spanish-language Mass at St. John the Baptist Church at 2324 Omilo Lane in Kalihi.
The fiesta will follow at the social hall, where children will enact the arrival of the Three Kings, and the Spanish Chorale Group will lead caroling in Spanish.
Entertainment will continue until 6 p.m. with music by Los Cariosos, Tommy Valentine y Sus Amigos, Second Time Around and Surprise Parranda con Salsa. A $5 donation is requested, with children under 10 years of age admitted free. For information, call 847-2751.
>> The audience will become part of the choir during the 7:30 p.m. performance of the Holden Evening Prayer program of music, readings and meditation tomorrow at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave.
Attendees will be given copies of the musical score and may join with the church choir in the choral movements of the Holden Evening Prayer.
Music from the service, which was developed at the Holden Village retreat center in Washington, includes modern hymns used in Christian churches including "Joyous Light of Heavenly Glory" and "My Soul Proclaims Your Greatness, O God."
Soloists will include vocalists David Reese, Joanna and Lee Takagi, and harpist Claire Rivero. The Rev. Neal MacPherson will lead as cantor. Music minister Don Conover will direct. The ad hoc chorus will be accompanied by guitar, violin, bass, piano, organ and percussion. Call 949-2220 for information.
>> Dana T. Marsh of Oxford University in England will be the guest conductor at the 8 p.m. performance by the Bach Chamber Orchestra and choir from the Lutheran Church at 1730 Punahou St. The presentation of Part 6 of Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas oratorio "Herr Wenn die stolzen Feinde Schnauben" will feature soloists Georgine Stark, Carl Crosier, Les Ceballos, Johannes Bendtz and Joseph Z. Pettit as evangelist. Call 941-2566 for information.
