Episcopal revival features dean of divinity school
A three-day Windward Revival next weekend will feature as keynote speaker an Episcopal Church bishop who is a member of the Choctaw tribe in Oklahoma and has written extensively on American Indian concerns and spirituality.The Right Rev. Steven Charleston, president and dean of Episcopal Divinity School in Hartford, Conn., will speak at sessions Friday, next Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 13. He is the former bishop of Alaska and is a member of the denomination's Standing Commission on Anglican and International Peace with Justice.
The events sponsored by five Windward Episcopal churches are all free and open to the public.
"Who is Jesus?" will be the topic at the 7 p.m. Friday meeting at Calvary Episcopal Church, 45-435 Aumoku St., Kaneohe.
"Who Am I?" will be the theme at 7 p.m. next Saturday at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 93 N. Kainalu Drive, Kailua.
Charleston will also speak at a youth beach gathering from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Kailua Beach Park.
The bishop will discuss the question "Where Are We?" at a 4 p.m. Sunday joint community Eucharistic Celebration at Castle High School Theater, Kaneohe. A free dinner will follow.
Bible Institute offers help applying Scriptures to life
The Bible Institute of Hawaii will offer a variety of classes designed to help people apply the Scriptures to modern life in its winter quarter, which begins next week.The courses include "One Day at a Time" for people experiencing divorce, widowhood or separation, "Discovering Jesus in Leviticus," "Finding Yourself in Jesus' Parables," "Daniel: Flourishing in a Hostile Environment" and "Living Right, Leading Well," a study based on St. Paul's letters to Timothy and Titus.
The institute, in operation since 1972, also offers credit classes under three certification programs for Christian school teachers and others.
Information on the classes, which are offered at several Oahu churches, is available by calling Mary at 943-0833.
Greek Orthodox church offers insight into beliefs
Oahu's only Greek Orthodox congregation will present an informational program about its beliefs and worship service at the Punchbowl church next weekend as part of a continuing ecumenical educational tour.The Open Table Pilgrimage visit will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 13 at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Pacific, 930 Lunalilo St.
Open Table, a study group open to members of any church or faith, sponsors the program, which gives visitors a chance for an inside look at a different church or temple each month. It is free and open to the public.
