In The Mix
Surf stuffs up at
free weekend eventSANTA may have visited the 808 state last week, but Town and Country Surf's "GO BIG" event this Saturday will be another Christmas for a few lucky people. KCCN FM100's Shannon Scott and Pipi will be giving away bodyboards, fins, T-shirts and more every five minutes from noon to 2 p.m. at the Ala Moana Center Stage.
Also scheduled to show up are over 20 professional bodyboarders and surfers who will sign autographs and give out posters to fans in attendance. Mike Stewart, Ben Severson and Fred Booth are among those supposed to be on hand, but who knows what'll happen if a swell rolls in this weekend. Sign autographs or hit the waves -- now there's a hard decision to make.
Da Kine, Morey, Toobs, Da Fin and other companies are also a part of this free annual event. Past years have seen some epic crowds, so get there early for your crack at the free stuff.
Eggs 'N Things MIA
News reports last week chronicled the fire at Eggs 'N Things, a popular Waikiki restaurant among those up all night. My first impression was that it was a minor kitchen fire and I'd be back in there after a hard night out in a few weeks.Looks like that's not the case; repairs are rumored to take months to complete. As soon as I find out when a reopening is scheduled, you'll read about it here...
Put those brain cells to use in 2002
Going to school doesn't always have to be boring or keep you stuck behind a desk. Windward Community College offers a number of interesting classes this spring through its Hawaii Music Institute.
If you've ever wanted to learn how to play the ukulele or slack key guitar, here's your chance. Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners Brother Noland and Melveen Leed are among those teaching classes this semester on the Windward side.
Playing an instrument not your cup of tea? Milton Lau and Bill Meyer offer up "Promoting and Marketing Your Band" and "The Business of Music," two classes any aspiring entertainer should consider checking out.
Tuition ranges from $25 to $120, and class sessions run anywhere from one day to six weeks in length. Call 235-7396 for information on how to register.
Just remember: Always double down on 11
Legalized gambling may or may not become a reality in Hawaii, but one local nightspot wants to get its guests a little more familiar with the equipment. A request has been made to the Honolulu Liquor Commission to allow for a blackjack table to run at Zanzabar every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After holding off on making a decision, the commission is scheduled to consider the request at its meeting this week. Since playing for money would be illegal (right?), it'll be interesting to see what incentive people have to actually sit down and spend time at a blackjack table. Hey, maybe a $2.99 buffet or some complimentary drinks? Check back here next week to see if the Liquor Commission agreed to the request.
Out and About
Island music fans looking for a kick-back vibe tonight may want to give the Hawaiian Hut in the Ala Moana Hotel a try. Uprising opens and Ho'onua will headline the "Myth 50 Winter Games," presented by Mellow Mood Entertainment and e808.com. Doors open at 10 for those 18 and over, and Hawaiian Airlines will have a free West Coast round trip up for grabs for those who show. Call 585-8722 for details.>> Local promoters Mass Appeal Entertainment have set up shop at Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar on Saturdays, calling the night "Bump 'n Grindz."
Namahana will perform this weekend, with DJ Galmiche spinning wax as well. Half-price sushi is the norm at Sansei late at night -- just be sure to get up and dance off all that food you'll be ordering.
Other bands scheduled to perform this month at Sansei include Red Degree and Hawaiian Time. Call 566-0644 for details.
>> Word has it that Garden of Saigon is also starting to draw crowds on the weekends. 102.7 Da Bomb's Ric Havoc was there last Saturday sipping on 99-cent drinks and handing out prizes.
Garden of Saigon is on Nuuanu Avenue in Chinatown, so people on the way to Indigo or Aloha Tower Marketplace could add it to their list of party options. For ages 18 and over. Call 537-6971 for details.
