2001 photo portfolio

This photo at left is my favorite photo of 2001. It's pure fun in Hawaiian summer surf. The photo was taken on the South Shore of Oahu at Kewalo's.

The 4th of July fireworks show, below, is reflected off the glass of the Waterfront Towers.

Rosa Ayres, 3, waited with her mom Rissie Ayres, to see a Red Cross worker after Rosa walked through a mercury-contaminated area on March 12. Although Rosa was too young to know what happened, her face shows worry. This is memorable to me for two reasons. First, it shows how a small amount of toxic substances can disrupt lives. This was also the last assignment I shot on film. All my pictures are now shot with a digital camera. Everything evolves, I hope for the better.

Above, with respect to all affected by the events of Sept. 11, I feel the biggest local story was the collision of the USS Greeneville and the Ehime Maru in waters off Oahu in February. My shot of the surviving Japanese crewmen, which ran in US News and World Report, added a human face to an accident only they witnessed.

RICHARD WALKER / RWALKER@STARBULLETIN.COM
The photo at left was one of my first as a Star-Bulletin photographer, and one of my favorites. Kaaina Brash, 10 months, just didn't want to cooperate during his photo session at Kakaako Waterfront Park on April 3. He got to know the inside of a lauhala hat, as dad Ngai Brash tried to keep it on his head. They were there to take photos for Kaaina's first-birthday party invitations.

Our Redeemer Elementary School students, above, participated in Multi-Cultural Day, Sept. 21. Pipe Major Emeritus Larry Coleman of Celtic Pipes and Drums of Hawaii played his bagpipe for Kindergartners, much to their dismay. Bagpipes are the only musical instrument classified as weapons of war. Napoleon once called the Kilted Scottish Highland Regiment, "Women from Hell."

Playing Cowboy Poker in Waimanalo, cowboys sit around a table and an angry 2,000-pound bull is set loose. Last cowboy sitting wins. From left are Kyle Clark of Oklahoma, Jesse Tiller of Texas and Jake Luquin of Oregon. Luquin won.
