A $500,000 donation from the James & Abigail Campbell Foundation has launched a capital campaign at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

The center hopes to raise the money to build a family medical center, with floors dedicated to primary and pediatric care.

The Campbell Foundation gift is for the pediatric floor, to be called the James & Abigail Campbell Keiki Clinic.

"I am sure that our Hawaiian grandmother, Abigail Campbell, will be particularly pleased that this Keiki Clinic will serve so many needy Hawaiian children," said James Shingle, foundation president and grandson of James and Abigail Campbell.

More than 7,000 children from birth to age 14 use the health center annually.

Steve MacMillan, president of the center's board and chief operating officer of the Estate of James Campbell, said, "The new pediatric floor will give even more children from Waianae and surrounding communities access to full-service, integrated medical care in a modern facility."

Health needs have grown steadily in West Oahu, said Richard Bettini, the health center's executive director.

"We are anticipating increased health-care needs for the families who will soon transition off of welfare and for those who have been laid off work," he said.

"This donation from the Campbell family comes at a crucial time and will be greatly appreciated by our community."
