UH-BYU football game
breaks ESPN2 record

The football game between Hawaii and Brigham Young Dec. 8 was the most viewed college football game in the history of ESPN2, Hawaii athletics director Hugh Yoshida said yesterday.

The game made more than 1.5 million household impressions, which was also the third-largest audience in the history of the network regardless of sport.

"We knew it was going to be the most watched game in this school's history and this kind of proves it," head coach June Jones said in a release. "I hope this will help in getting more national exposure again next year when we go to Provo."

The Warriors will travel to Provo, Utah Sept. 7, 2002 in their second game next season.

Chaminade splits pair of Colorado road games

Chaminade nearly blew a 22-point lead, but held on last night to beat Colorado Christian 78-72 in Lakewood, Colo.

The win came a night after Chaminade dropped an 89-70 decision to Northern Colorado.

Yesterday, Albert Powell hit six 3-pointers en route to a 21-point performance for the Silverswords (5-4).Mike Donegan added 18 points and Jaborri Thomas 15 more.

Chaminade led 40-24 at halftime but CCU (5-5) actually managed to tie the game in the final minute.

On Thursday, Powell and Igor Beljanski paced the Silverswords with 14 points each.

BYUH's Kalabic named first team All-American

Brigham Young-Hawaii freshman Vanja Kalabic was named first team All-American yesterday by the American Water Polo Coaches Association.

Kalabic, a 6-3 driver from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, scored 73 goals to lead the Seasiders to an 11-12 record in its inaugural season of water polo.

He led the Seasiders in scoring in 18 of their 23 matches, averaging 3.17 goals per game and torching Chaminade for seven.

Hula Bowl expects 100,000th spectator

The lucky fan who is the Hula Bowl Maui's 100,000th spectator will be awarded tickets to the 2003 Super Bowl as well as airfare and accommodations.

Officials expect to reach the mark in its fifth game at War Memorial Stadium on Feb. 2.

Tickets are currently on sale for the college All-Star game at the Hula Bowl Logo Store in the Maui Mall seven days a week or by phone at 871-4141, ext. 5.

Mercedes to be broadcast live nationwide

ESPN has scheduled 11 1/2 hours of live coverage of January's Mercedes Championships at Kapalua, Maui.

The schedule, which is an hour and a half longer than last year, is from 3-5 p.m. on Jan. 3 and from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 4-5. The final day will be aired Jan. 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Among the players scheduled to play for a share of the $4 million purse are Tiger Woods, Davis Love, Justin Leonard, David Duval and defending champion Jim Furyk.

Scott All-Academic in West Coast Conference

Zach Scott, a senior defender for the Gonzaga Bulldogs from Haiku, Maui, has been selected to the 2001 West Coast Conference Fall Soccer All-Academic Team.

Scott maintains a 3.29 grade point average while majoring in math. He will graduate in May.

UH alum Carter on injured list

MIAMI >> The Miami Heat placed point guard Anthony Carter on the injured list with an abdominal strain, the team said.

The Hawaii alumnus had appeared in all 23 games for the Heat this season prior to tonight's 86-81 overtime loss to Cleveland, averaging 6.3 points, 6.2 assists and 3.3 rebounds. He must sit out at least four more games while on the injured list.

To replace Carter on the roster, the Heat activated rookie forward Malik Allen.
