Zoo celebrates Christmas
'Tis the season for holiday cheer at the Honolulu Zoo, with "Christmas with the Animals" taking place 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today. Witness a true spectacle when zoo animals receive a special gift in celebration of the holidays.Lions will receive zebra-shaped meat-filled piñatas, while the chimpanzees will uncover neatly wrapped surprises contributed by the public, such as old stuffed animals, plastic toys and soccer balls.
The gifts will be placed in the animals' exhibits first, then the animals will be let loose to explore and find the gifts, examine them, and inevitably either rip them open (as the tigers are expected to do) or excitedly unwrap them (like the chimps).
Visits will take place as follows:
10 a.m. -- Chimpanzee exhibit
10:30 a.m. --Tiger exhibit
11 a.m. -- Monkey Island
11:30 a.m. -- Rusti, the Orangutan
Noon -- Elephants
The zoo is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, except for Christmas and New Year's Day. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for kamaaina, $1 for children ages 6-12 and free for children under 5 years of age. For general information, call 971-7174.
