The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation donated $500,000 yesterday to Hawaii's four food banks to purchase and distribute food to the needy on all islands.

The Hawaii Foodbank received $200,000, while the Hawaii Island Food Bank, Kauai Food Bank, and Maui Community Food Bank each received $100,000.

"The food banks were selected to receive this grant because of their contributions to helping the poor and needy in Hawaii," said the foundation in a press release.

The Hawaii Foodbank also received more than four tons of food from TheBus and Handi-Van employees as part of their annual food drive. The food was picked up yesterday.

"I appreciate the generosity of our employees and their eagerness to help individuals and families who are in need," said James E. Cohen, president of Oahu Transit Services Inc.
