Hearing set for Big Isle pakalolo rules
The Hawaii County Police Department will hold a second public hearing on its proposed Administrative Rules and Regulations governing marijuana eradication operations and reconnaissance missions and medical marijuana investigations.The hearing will be held at the Kona Police Station, 74-5221 Queen Kaahumanu Hwy., at 10 a.m. Jan. 3.
The department held its first hearing on a draft of the proposed rules in August in Hilo.
Those who want to present oral testimony should register before the hearing convenes.
Those who are unable to attend may submit their written comments to the Hawaii County Police Department, 349 Kapiolani St., Hilo, HI 96720.
People who need special accommodations to attend the hearing should call 961-2258 by Dec. 20. Those using TDDs may call 961-8267.

Isle groups earn praise from EPA
Two Hawaii groups were honored this month by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at an awards ceremony in San Francisco for their work on the environment.
>> Project Loko Ia was recognized for restoring the Kahi- napohaku fishpond and aquaculture production at the nearby Ualapue fishpond, both on Molokai.The two Hawaii winners were among 31 groups and individuals chosen for acknowledgment in the EPA region that includes Hawaii, California, Arizona, Nevada, Guam and tribal lands. The winners were selected from among 100 nominees.>> The Hanalei Heritage River Program was cited for identifying a source of bacteria in the river, planting native plants along the river, and helping local students map current and historical uses of the ahupuaa.
"Today's honorees have applied creativity, teamwork and leadership in addressing many of Hawaii's most pressing and complex environmental problems, said Wayne Nastri, EPA regional administrator. "Thanks to the efforts of these individuals, our air, water and land will be cleaner and safer for generations to come. The winners set an example for all of us to follow."

Police charge Makiki man in love-triangle assault
Honolulu police charged a 45-year-old Makiki man yesterday for allegedly beating another man he found sleeping with his ex-girlfriend. Wayne C. Rezentes, 45, was arrested Sunday for second-degree assault.Police said Rezentes entered the 38-year-old woman's Kewalo Street residence through the balcony and found her sleeping with a 26-year-old man. Police said Rezentes assaulted the victim with an expandable baton, then threatened him with a cleaver.
Rezentes is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.
Stepfather released after alleged assault on girl, 10
A Fern Street man was arrested yesterday in the alleged sexual assault of his 10-year-old stepdaughter, police said.The alleged assault took place sometime in August, and the 33-year-old man has been released pending an investigation, police said.

Housekeeper arrested in theft of birds
A 53-year-old woman was arrested yesterday in connection with the theft of seven exotic birds.The owner of the birds, a 69-year-old Waikiki man, hired the woman as a housekeeper for his Waikiki apartment. Police said the woman took the man's birds and sold them.
They arrested her after the resident manager of the apartment complex provided video from a security camera showing the woman taking the birds. Police said some of the birds have been recovered.
