Kauai's Andy Irons posted the top heat score of the day at the Xbox Pipeline Masters on the North Shore yesterday, making the highly challenging conditions look like a kiddie pool. Irons advances with high heat
Irons broke the leash of his board on his first ride and was forced to shore to retrieve the board and tie on a new leash. But he managed to maintain his composure and put together the best heat of the day -- 22.9 points out of 30.
In progressing, Irons has kept his chance of winning the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series title alive.
Australian Tom Carroll, who won the event in 1987, 1990 and 1991, posted a ride of 9.5.
It was surely no honeymoon for popular Pipeline charger Shane Dorian, married last night and wiping out on some of the biggest waves. Dorian injured both feet after a succession of hammering wipeouts that also broke off two of the fins on his board. In the same treacherous heat, rookie Pipeliner Danny Fuller had the contest jersey ripped from his body during a tube-ride.
"I took off on that one wave, the same one that broke two fins out of my board, and it drove me down so hard," said 29-year-old Dorian. "I could barely even stand up on the wave I took off on after that and that was it."
Dorian needed only a couple of points to progress, but couldn't continue.
