But you'll have to go
to Maui to see her

Star-Bulletin

Natalie Merchant will perform at 8 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Amphitheatre. Tickets, at $30 and $40, go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday to MACC members, and 10 a.m. Dec. 22 to the public.

Merchant will be presenting songs from her latest album, "Motherland," as she continues a yearlong world tour that began in October.

Merchant began her recording career in 1981 as the lead vocalist and lyricist with the folk art pop band 10,000 Maniacs. She recorded six albums with the group, beginning with 1982's "Hope Chest," and wound up her association with the band with "10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged," in 1993.

Her solo albums are "Tigerlily" (1995), "Ophelia" (1997) and "Natalie Merchant Live in Concert" (1999).

Her thought-provoking lyricism has led critics to describe her as "the Emily Dickinson or Flannery O'Connor of pop." Her reputation as a songwriter and distinctive voice have earned her a loyal following.
