Manoa Valley Theatre
puts spotlight on Tom Moffatt

NORMALLY, promoter Tom Moffatt prefers to be a behind-the-scenes kind of guy, putting others in the limelight in a way that gives him all but anonymity. Of course those who know him, and have benefited from his generosity, are aware of his contributions, and now one of them is taking action. Manoa Valley Theatre will be honoring Moffatt for his efforts on the theater's behalf from his usual backstage stance. MVT will fete Moffatt at its annual fund-raiser in February at the Hilton Hawaiian Village with none other than Channel 2 anchorman (and sometime actor) Joe Moore acting as emcee. Some 600 people are expected to attend the event, which promises to be a party to remember ...

SINGER Carole Kai hit a high note during her interview with Lanai & Augie on their 98.6 radio show. When Augie told Carole he knew a guy who's 92 and fooling around with a 20-something girl, she quipped, "If he were my husband I'd toss him out the window." How come? "If he's 92 and can be with a 20-something-year-old girl, then he should be able to fly." Augie cracked up ... Incidentally, Melveen Leed is recuperating nicely from her heart problem and is back in rehearsals with Kai and Nohelani Cypriano for their Dec. 19 Divas concert, "This One's for You, Loyal," in the Hawaii Ballroom of the Sheraton. Comic Mel Cabang will open the show, but promises to keep it clean ...

AFTER reading here about the old Palm Tree Inn in Waikiki, June Takano sent along a bumper sticker she'd had for years to "someone who would love it as much as we did. The ancient bumper sticker read, "Forget Diamond Head...Save Palm Tree Inn." Two down and who knows how many to go ...

New kid on block

WITH the opening of Morton's, the elegant steakhouse in Ala Moana Center, other restaurateurs have been dropping by to try out the new kid on the block. Assistant G.M. Zyron Schoniwitz was particularly pleased to see Desert Island Restaurants CEO Randy Schoch come in. "Z," as he likes to be called, worked for Schoch at Black Orchid and Nick's many years before Randy opened Ruth's Chris Steak House. Schoch had dropped by with Aaron Placourakis, owner of Aaron's atop the Ala Moana and Sarento at the Top of the I. And dining at another nearby table was Alan Wong ...

IT'S not your mother's "Christmas Carol," or even Charles Dickens's, but "Duck, Duck, Scrooge" is still a loose version of the holiday classic put through the comedic wringer by Loose Screws, the improv group who'll be performing the work tonight and tomorrow, with matinee and evening shows on Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m. in The Arts at Mark's Garage, Nuuanu and Bethel. Call 536-8047 for reservations -- all seats $10 ...

Apo's chapeaux

HE'S a man of many hats, that Peter Apo. He's a former Hawaii legislator, former city development chief for Waikiki who spearheaded the Brunch on the Beach series and is currently volunteer chair of the Hawaii alliance for Arts Education. He'll put on yet another hat Saturday as song leader at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center's Christmas Carnival and Bazaar where he'll lead kids and adults alike in a holiday sing-along ...
