Strangers avert
a tiresome hassle

As one who constantly grumbles about bad drivers, I am morally obliged to confess to an uplifting experience the other night.

Heading kokohead on H-1 about 7:30 p.m., the lights of my car suddenly went dim and the engine started to die. Luckily, the car had enough electricity to put on the turn signal and move from the center lane across the right lane to the shoulder, cutting off several drivers who must have thought I was nuts. Apologies to them, but I wanted to avoid breaking down in the middle of the highway.

I started walking to a gas station but hadn't gone fifty yards when two men in a van pulled up and offered me a lift. They went out of their way to take me to a station in Kaimuki where the owner immediately called a tow truck that responded within ten minutes. We circled around, lashed up my car, and took it to the station in Hawaii Kai where my car is usually serviced.

They couldn't work on it then but the owner, who is a friend, gave me a ride home when I had no other way to get there. By 8:30, I had escaped what could have been a tiring hassle. Mahalo to a half-dozen good guys. I owe you.
