Preview

The following is a preview of movies opening this weekend that runs every Tuesday in the Star-Bulletin:

"Not Another Teen Movie" -- Maybe this should be called "OH NO!!! Not ANOTHER Teen Movie!" Do we really need another lazily assembled parody movie about high school teens, trotting out clichés like the bitchy cheerleader, the new girl, the dumb jock, the token black and others of their ilk? But if you never liked John Hughes' films (the ones after "The Breakfast Club," anyway), this may warrant a weak chuckle or two (R).

"Vanilla Sky" -- On the other end of the spectrum, Tom Cruise's new film is based on the 1988 Spanish film by Alejandro Amenabar, "Open Your Eyes," a project that he brought to his "Jerry Maguire" director, Cameron Crowe. Cruise plays a womanizer who is disfigured after a car accident caused by a jilted lover (Cameron Diaz). His luck supposedly changes for the better when a doctor (Kurt Russell) informs him that his once handsome face can be reconstructed. Things get surreal when his best friend's girlfriend (Penelope Cruz) confesses her love to him.

Amenabar was approached to direct the remake but turned it down and went on to make the successful ghost story "The Others," starring Cruise's ex, Nicole Kidman. Crowe's adaptation hangs onto both the original's tricky narrative and Cruz, with an added dose of humor and a preoccupation with pop culture (R).
