Senate panel approves $465 million for Hawaii
The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $465.2 million for defense-related initiatives for Hawaii, U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye's office announced recently.The funds are included in the Fiscal Year 2002 Department of Defense Appropriations Bill, which now is being debated by the full Senate.
"Drafting this legislation has been a challenging process, given our nation's many urgent funding needs after Sept. 11," Inouye (D, Hawaii) said in a news release. "I am satisfied, however, that the measure provides the resources to fund programs that will protect Americans and our way of life."
Of the funds, $127 million is earmarked for defense initiatives on Kauai, and $85.2 million to be spent for programs on Maui.
Some of the initiatives to receive funding include:
>> Kahoolawe Restoration, $75 million.
>> Pacific Missile Range Facility (Kauai), $58 million.
>> Pearl Harbor Shipyard, $21 million.
>> Maui Space Surveillance System, $20.5 million.
>> Ultra High Frequency Electronically Scanned Antenna (Kauai), $20 million.
>> Tactical Component Network (Kauai), $20 million.
>> Akamai II and Hawaii Integrated Federal Health Care Partnership, $18 million.Earlier this year, Congress approved $382.8 million for military construction projects in Hawaii, Inouye's office said.
Criminal tax complaint could result in prison
A criminal tax complaint has been served on Carolina Dayoan for failing to file annual general excise tax returns for Dr. Hilarion Dayoan for 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999, state Tax Director Marie Okamura announced.Upon conviction, the misdemeanor carries penalties of up to $25,000 in fines or one year imprisonment or both for each year involved.
The tax director encourages taxpayers to file tax returns voluntarily. The department generally won't launch a criminal investigation when taxpayers voluntarily report their failure to file or other omissions, she said.
Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii plans benefit Santa breakfast
Families are invited to join Santa and friends at the Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii's 15th annual "Breakfast with Santa" fund-raiser Saturday. Lunch will also be served.Joining Santa will be costumed characters Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Elmo, Barley, Dalmatian, Taz, Bugs Bunny, Tweety and Sylvester.
Those who attend can help sponsor children from abuse shelters this holiday season.
All proceeds go to Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, a nonprofit organization to prevent child abuse through education, public awareness and advocacy.
The event will be held at the Japanese Cultural Center Manoa Grand Ballroom, 2454 S. Beretania St. Breakfast will be served 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and lunch from noon to 2 p.m.
Donations are $18 for adults, $15 for children, which includes a meal, photo with Santa, clowns, magicians, face painting, games, live stage entertainment, costumed characters and a Christmas gift. Seats are assigned on tables of 10. Purchase of an entire table will save $5.

>> The U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development has awarded a $240,000 Resident Opportunities and Self-Sufficiency grant to Island Tenants on the Rise. The statewide organization, a nonprofit group since 1998, plans to use the money to provide capacity building opportunities for approximately 10 resident associations on Oahu, Kauai and Maui. In addition, the grant will allow for training of residents in the areas of organizational and leadership development, fiscal responsibility, strategic planning, resident management feasibility and home ownership possibilities. >> Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center has been awarded two grants totaling $10,000. The Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation and Alexander and Baldwin Foundation each donated $5,000 to support the upcoming special sugar exhibit "Cane Crossings." A portion of the grant money will be used to produce a catalogue of the historical aspects of the mill and exhibited works. The Hui will also upgrade the access to and clear out the site of the old mill on the property. The Cane Crossings exhibit will open in March 2002.
>> The Kanu o ka 'Aina Learning Ohana has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Ho'oli Foundation. KALO, in partnership with the Kanu o ka 'Aina Charter School, will use the money to purchase a cluster of custom-made containers to provide meeting, storage and greenhouse space for KALO's Project Pu'upulehu.
>> Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono and volunteers from We Care About Neighbors recently donated $1,675 in cash and 1,000 pounds to the Hawaii Foodbank. Hirono and We CAN volunteers collected the money and food donations on Oct. 27 and Nov. 10 at Times Supermarket in Waimalu and at Aloha Stadium, respectively.
>> Sherri Lyn W.J. Chong, Naomi Rhodes and Cindy Tran have been awarded scholarships by the Hawaii Dental Service Foundation for the 2001-2002 academic year. Chong, a student at the University of Pittsburgh (Penn.) School of Dental Medicine, received $1,000. Rhodes and Tran both received $500 toward their studies at the UH School of Dental Hygiene.
>> Fresh Start received a $15,000 grant from the McInerny Foundation for the Women's Gender Specific Program.

Police consider 1 suspect in 3 weekend robberies
Police are investigating whether the same man is responsible for three armed robberies over the weekend.Two Oahu gas stations were robbed at knifepoint yesterday, and the 7-Eleven on the corner of Atkinson Drive and Kapiolani Boulevard was robbed Saturday afternoon. Police said it may be the same man because the words used and weapon were similar in all cases.
At 8:30 a.m. yesterday, a man described in his late 20s to early 30s robbed the French Wrench Shell service station at 520 Ward Ave., police said. the man, who had a knife, was described as about 6 feet tall, 180 to 200 pounds with a fair complexion and a scar from his upper to lower lip.
Shortly after 11:30 last night, a man with a similar description used a knife to rob the Union 76 station at 1406 S. Beretania St., police said. There was no description of the man who robbed the 7-Eleven just before 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police to investigate sexual abuse of 2-year-old
A 2-year-old was sexually assaulted while in the care of a family friend in Waipahu, according to police.Police said the child was left with the baby sitter on Saturday, when the assault occurred between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The child later complained to her mother of having pains in her genital area. The mother questioned her child and discovered the child had been sexually abused, police said. The case is pending investigation.

Waianae man dies after severe 2-car collision
A driver died yesterday morning after he was involved in a two-car collision near Kahe Point.A medical examiner identified him as Robert Reis, 59, of Waianae. Police said a female driver was speeding Waianae-bound on Farrington Highway near the Aliinui Drive overpass in a 2001 green Chrysler at 6:58 a.m.
She attempted to pass Reis, collided into the driver side of Reis' 1986 maroon Toyota and caused the vehicle to flip over.
Both drivers were taken to Queen's Medical Center by helicopter in critical condition. Reis was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:15 a.m.
Police said the female driver was upgraded to serious condition. Reis' passenger was initially in critical condition and upgraded to serious condition. Speed and alcohol were factors in the collision, police said.
Nanakuli grandfather arrested for sex assault
A 61-year-old Nanakuli man turned himself in to police after his 14-year-old granddaughter reported he sexually abused her early Saturday morning, police said.Police said the Waipahu teenager was asleep at her grandfather's Nanakuli home on a recliner.
She told police that at about 12:30 a.m., her grandfather picked her up and put her in his bed, and began fondling her. When he got up to use the bathroom, she ran to the living room and called her parents. Her father confronted his father, who then turned himself in at the Waianae Police Station, where he was arrested for third-degree sexual assault.

Maui man dies in water at Kehena Beach
HILO >> A 47-year-old Maui man died at Kehena Beach yesterday afternoon. Fire rescue identified the victim as Daniel Carmack.Carmack was swimming with a cousin at 3:33 p.m. when witnesses saw the victim more than 300 yards offshore floating face down in the water.
A rescue helicopter pulled the victim from the ocean.
The 47-year-old man was taken to Hilo Medical Center by ambulance where he was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m.
60-year-old pedestrian struck, killed by pickup
WAILUKU >> A 60-year-old Maui man died after a car struck him while he was crossing Kahului Beach Road.Neal K. Campbell of Kahului was hit by the car at 6:32 p.m. yesterday.
Police traffic investigator Ericlee Correa said a pickup truck then struck the rear of the car. He said there are no crosswalks for pedestrians in the area.
