The Hawaii Wahine soccer team was picked to finished sixth in the Western Athletic Conference by the league coaches in their preseason poll.

The Wahine surprised everyone by finishing tied for second place in the regular-season standings, then playing their way into the WAC postseason tournament championship match, a first in the program's eight-year history.

Part way through the season, when the Wahine had a 4-7 mark, any mention of 2001 being a record-setting season would have been met with laughter. However, the team turned its act around, discovered an offense that produced 2.7 goals per match en route to a 6-3 finish that leveled the season record at 10-10.

Thirteen individual and 10 team records were set. Interestingly enough, the Wahine accomplished much of this on the road since they played just six of their 20 matches at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore striker Arlene Devitt and senior striker Veronica Flores established six and four records, respectively.

Devitt's marks are for career goals (19); goals (12), points (29) and shots (66) in a season, shots in a match (11), and points in a match (6) which she did twice.

Flores leaves tied with Jennifer Starsiak for most career points (47) and is tops in career shots (139), most goals in a match (3) and is tied with Devitt for points in a match (6).

Junior goalkeeper Jennifer Churchill has the best career winning percentage (.625) and won a record 10 matches.

Krystalynn Ontai and Joelle Sugai set a freshman record for assists with five and Ontai tied the school record for an assist in consecutive matches with three. Tiffany Makue's three assists against Nevada is a single-match mark.

The Wahine set match records for points (20 against Boise State), goals (7 vs. Boise State) and assists (7 vs. Nevada). The season records were for goals (38), assists (38), points (114), shots (279), fouls (322) and average attendance (1,129). The 2,488 fans at the Southern Methodist contest is a single-match mark.
