"I didn't worry about the fact he was in Afghanistan because he's very highly trained," she said.
"They had to drop a bomb to stop him."
Carol Amerine said an Army chaplain contacted Jason's father, Ronald Amerine.
Jason spoke to his father but had difficulty hearing, his mother said.
Carol Amerine said her main concern is when Jason realizes the three Marines killed and those injured were his men.
"He always put the welfare of his men above his own," she said.
She said his unit and another were in a heavy firefight near Kandahar and were positioned 100 meters from where the bomb landed.
"It happens," Carol Amerine said.
"I'm not angry. Something went wrong."
Carol Amerine said her son's main concern was that it was not his or his unit's fault, and it was not.
Jason Amerine had served in Korea and Panama before being sent to Afghanistan.
Carol Amerine said her son always wanted to be a Green Beret captain since he joined the Junior ROTC in the ninth grade.
She said his punctured eardrum will probably end his career as a Green Beret.
