The FBI and Army officials are investigating a Tripler Army Medical Center pediatric intern who allegedly had child pornography on his home computer and secretly videotaped his roommates.

Investigators are also speaking with families whose children may have had contact with the intern through his job at Tripler.

"We do not want to cause any parent undue concern or anxiety," said Public Affairs Officer Margaret Tippy. "As soon as the investigation began, he was removed from any clinical work."

The intern is now performing administrative duties, she said.

An FBI spokeswoman could not comment on the details of the investigation except to confirm that there was a case involving a Tripler pediatric intern.

Sources said about six to 10 children who were patients are also being questioned. Tippy said the investigation had started by late July and that the intern had been working at Tripler for less than a month.

She also noted that Tripler usually encourages parents to be in the room when the doctor examines their child.

"If there are parents of children that were seen during this time period who have concerns about the care of their child during that time, they are welcome to call the Tripler pediatric patient assist line at 433-2251," said Tippy.

Sources familiar with the investigation told the Star-Bulletin that one of the intern's roommates discovered child pornography on the intern's home computer and then discovered hidden cameras around the house.

Sources said that the male intern lives with two other Tripler interns, a man and a woman, and that he was allegedly videotaping them at home.

Tippy said the intern's duties involved a combination of shadowing doctors and attending to patients.

The pediatric department at Tripler sees an average of 200 patients a day, ranging from infants to adolescents.
