City clears blocked line that caused sewage spill

The city is investigating whether vandalism caused a sewage spill that washed 58,100 gallons of sewage into Kalihi stream Monday.

City crews cleared boulders, rocks and gravel from a sewer line at Kuhio Park Terrace Monday afternoon. The sewage spill had been reported at 7:30 a.m. at 1485 Linapuni St. by a contractor doing work on the manhole. According to the contractor, someone entered the secured work site, removed the manhole cover and threw a very large rock into the manhole, which blocked the line under the apartment building.

Signs have been posted along affected areas of the stream, warning of contamination, and the area has been decontaminated.
