More ways to
cook like Sam
Chef Sam Choy has added two new volumes to his growing library of cookbooks."Cooking with Kids" and "Sam Choy Woks the Wok" (Mutual Publishing, $12.95) are meant for kitchen counters, not the coffee table, as are so many chef-showcase books.
Like last year's "Sam Choy's Sampler," they are compact, spiral-bound books that lie flat. They'd be easy to mail as a gift for ex-islanders.
The kids' book includes such recipes as Li Hing Mui Ice Cakes and Triple Decker Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. The wok book reaches beyond the traditional Chinese to include dishes such as Apples Poached with Macadamia Nuts.
Isle vanilla expanding
Hawaii-grown vanilla is expanding its retail presence, offering fresh beans, extract and vanilla-flavored Kona coffee through local stores.Jim Reddekopp's Hawaiian Vanilla Co. began offering beans earlier this year, only by mail order. The beans are grown by farmers on the Big Island's Hamakua Coast.
Items are now available at retail outlets including Compleat Kitchen and Executive Chef.
The product line remains available by mail through www.vanillavineyards.com. A single bean in a glass tube costs $9 (three beans, $26); extract is $11 for a 4-ounce bottle. An 8-ounce bag of coffee is $24. Shipping is included.
