Wahine softball signs 4,
1 will play in the spring

The Hawaii softball team signed four players yesterday, three to letters of intent and one to a scholarship for the upcoming season.

Stacey Ritter, a first baseman, is transferring in from the University of Technology-Sydney and is expected to hit anywhere in the five through seven spots this spring. Two local players, Ashley Ruff and Ashley Power, and an Arizona ballplayer will join Ritter on the team in the fall.

Ruff, a Star-Bulletin second-team shortstop with Kamehameha Schools, will be the heir apparent to Kate Judd.

"We're glad to keep her at home," Hawaii coach Bob Coolen said. "She has very quick hands and feet and comes from one of the better local programs in the state."

Power led Kealakehe High School in batting last year and figures to fit in somewhere in the middle infield.

The final incoming freshman is Hannah Butler, a speedy outfielder from Tucson, Ariz.

Hawaii Legends edge Los Angeles women

The Hawaii Legends women's pro football team defeated the Los Angeles Lasers 7-6 on Sunday at Kaiser High School.

Ilima Vicente's 3-yard touchdown run and Hilary Okumura's extra point brought Hawaii back from a 6-0 deficit.

It was the second straight victory for the Legends, who also beat the Lasers on Thursday.

The Legends play the Oakland Banshees on Oct. 13 and Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at Kaiser High School.

Hawaii's semifinal clash with UCLA in the semifinals of the NCAA volleyball tournament will be aired live on KFVE Thursday at 3 p.m. and replayed at 8 p.m.

Chris Marlow and Angie Kammer will call the action from the Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Should the Wahine advance, the station also plans on airing the Friday final also.

Swingman Nolan Hall of New Jersey signed on with the University of Hawaii-Hilo during the early NCAA signing period.

The 6-foot-6 senior at Southern Regional High School averaged 22.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last year.

Hall was also recruited by small NCAA Division I programs such as Lehigh and Mercer.
