Ballard, Abubo knocked out of Billabong Maui
Three-time consecutive world champion and current ratings leader Layne Beachley advanced from her first heat against fellow Australian Trudy Todd in three- to five-foot waves at the Billabong Pro Maui yesterday. They waited a week to get enough surf to begin the event.
"I'm glad the event started, just to get the first heat nerves out of the way," Beachley said. "Knowing that the main world-title contender Rochelle Ballard was knocked out made things a little easier. But I'm treating this event like I would any other, going into it wanting to win, whether it's riding on a world title or not."
Surprise eliminations were Hawaiians Ballard and Megan Abubo. They lost to Australians Pauline Menczer and Kylie Webb, respectively.
