Billabong Pro Maui, Rip Curp Cup postponed

Small surf off Maui and Oahu forced the postponement of the Billabong Pro Maui and Rip Curl Cup yesterday.

Contest officials for the Maui event at Honolua Bay expect a swell tomorrow or Monday. The $60,000 tournament is the final event on the women's Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour (WCT).

The $250,000 Rip Curl Cup at Sunset Beach is the final Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tournament (WCT) of the year and will decide the 2001 men's world champion.

Nine surfers -- including two competitors from Hawaii -- are in contention for the world title, making this the most open world championship battle in pro surfing's 26-year history.

Retired NYC firefighter is marathon VIP guest

Vic Navarra, a retired New York City firefighter, will be a VIP guest at the starting line of the Honolulu Marathon on Dec. 9.

Navarra has been the official starter for the New York City Marathon since 1981.

He was in Pennsylvania when the Sept. 11 attacks occurred, and he immediately called his old firehouse, ladder 35, and said, "Be safe, brothers."

He sped to New York the next day, wearing the badge he thought he'd never wear again.

"It was total bedlam," Navarra said. "Ironically, the guy I spoke to on the phone was the only survivor of the first group that responded to ground zero."
