Hilton USTA event returns for third time

The Hilton Waikoloa USTA Challenger, a world-class tennis tournament, will be returning for the third time to the Kohala Coast on the Big Island.

The main draws will be played Jan. 22-27, 2002.

Early this year, 18-year-old Andy Roddick won the men's title at Waikoloa, and it was the beginning of a sensational run in which he won three Association of Tennis Professionals titles and scored victories over Pete Sampras, Marcelo Rios and Gustavo Kuerten.

The list of players coming to Waikoloa for the January tournament hasn't been finalized.

Tickets will be available in December. For more information, call 518-274-1674.

Rip Curl Cup competitors to get Jet Ski assistance

There are two big changes in this year's Rip Curl Cup at Sunset Beach.

Also, Jet Skis are being re-introduced for the first time in 13 years. After finishing a wave, surfers will be towed back out to the lineup by the high-powered watercraft.

The Rip Curl Cup main event will begin when conditions improve. Yesterday, the waves were blown out and competition was postponed.

The Billabong Girls contest on Maui was also postponed yesterday because of poor conditions.

The 2001 men's and women's world champions will emerge out of the Rip Curl Cup and the Billabong Girls.
