5 indicted for
Kalihi killing

Star-Bulletin staff

An Oahu grand jury has indicted five men for second-degree murder in a fatal beating at a Kalihi cockfight Nov. 16.

Evan and Branden Kakugawa, Jason Yoshimura, Don Cabinian and Lamaar Richardson, also known as Lamaar Silva, were also charged yesterday with second-degree attempted murder.

Bail for each was set at $500,000.

Leon Fernandez, 39, had confronted the group for beating up an acquaintance, Eufracio Esmeralda, when they turned on him.

Witnesses said the suspects punched and kicked Fernandez repeatedly in the head even after he lost consciousness. He was declared brain dead the next day.

Esmeralda, 41, had been beaten in the head with a tree branch and kicked repeatedly, but survived.

All except Richardson have been arrested.

Evan Kakugawa and Yoshimura have since posted bond.
