Navy looks for lost sailor in Indian Ocean waters
A Navy destroyer and a P-3C Orion patrol aircraft are searching the Indian Ocean for a Pearl Harbor-based sailor who was lost at sea.The Navy said Petty Officer 2nd Class Randy Glenn Whitaker, 44, from Trinidad, Tex., was reported missing after a 4:30 a.m. roll call on the destroyer USS Russell yesterday morning.
The Russell, which left Pearl Harbor Oct. 25, on a six-month Western Pacific deployment, was 850 miles southwest of India at the time.
The 500-foot destroyer, with its crew of 25 officers and more than 300 enlisted sailors, joined the frigate USS Ford and the destroyer USS John Young from San Diego to enforce United Nations sanctions against Iraq in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.
Whitaker has served in the Navy since 1988.
The ship's crew, led by Cmdr. Hank Miranda, conducted a search of the ship's interior to ensure Whitaker was not on board.
The USS Russell and Navy P-3C maritime patrol aircraft have retraced the area traveled in the hour and a half between the time Whitaker was last seen and the time he was reported missing.
