Mililani’s Neil Rose is
All-Ivy unanimous choice

Harvard quarterback Neil Rose of Mililani was unanimously selected to the All-Ivy first team yesterday.

Rose was one of six Crimson players named on every coach's ballot, joining defensive lineman Marc Laborsky, offensive lineman Jason Hove, linebacker Dante Balestracci, defensive back Willie Alford and wide receiver Carl Morris.

Rose was in contention for the conference's player of the year award, but it went to his favorite target, Morris, instead.

Rose led Harvard to its first undefeated season in 88 years with 15 touchdowns, only five interceptions and 1,830 passing yards in eight games. Morris caught 71 passes for 943 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Padaca, Bacalso make Rip Curl main event

Hawaii's Myles Padaca and Kekoa Bacalso advanced to the main event of the Rip Curl Cup during trials yesterday in 6-8 foot waves at Sunset Beach.

The Rip Curl Cup is the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour season-ending event. A handful of surfers are gunning for the world title. The contest is also the second leg of the Vans Triple Crown.

Mick Fanning of Australia also made it into the main event against the WCT's top 45-rated surfers as a wild card after winning this year's World Qualifying Series, which is a feeder system for the WCT.

Bacalso, 16, beat six-time world champion Kelly Slater in the quarterfinals of yesterday's trials.

Slater, who is coming out of retirement after a few years off, didn't make the main Rip Curl Cup field.

Metzger and Wong in final AVP draw

Stein Metzger of Honolulu and Kevin Wong of Pearl City are in the main draw of the Association of Volleyball Professionals final event, which starts Thursday at Camburi Beach, Brazil.

Metzger and Wong are ranked fifth internationally after winning three titles this season. Brazilians Tande Ramos and Emanuel Rego have already clinched the regular-season title, but the tournament is still worth $27,000.

Sean Scott of Kailua is also in the main draw, teaming with Todd Rogers for the first time.

Marathon registration rises above 21,000

The number of people registered for the 29th Honolulu Marathon rose to 21,434 yesterday.

That's 3,241 less than the number of registrations by this date last year.

Last year, 26,465 registered.

The marathon is scheduled for Dec. 9.

The deadline for walkup registration will continue through to the day before the race.

Amateurs take lead in Burns Cup golf

A team of Hawaii amateurs took a slim 7-5 lead over a team of professionals after the first round of the Governor John A. Burns Challenge Cup golf tournament yesterday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Jonathan Ota and Jarett Hamamoto of the amateur team were the only tandem to win two matches on the day. They beat pros Jerry Mullen and Tommy Hines 5 and 4 in a Better Ball match, and then topped Mullen and Hines 3 and 2 in a Scotch Foursome match.
