Police Sgt. Charles Hirata said officers were investigating the cause of the accident at Makamakaole Gulch that occurred at 4:52 p.m. yesterday off Kahekili Highway.
Hirata said a woman who survived the accident but whose condition remained unknown was flown to Queen's Medical Center on Oahu.
In a separate crash, Edward Anthony, 77, of Wailea died after the car he was driving struck a sugar-cane haul truck at Keahua Junction.
Police investigator William Hankins said the car was traveling in the Kahului direction on Haleakala Highway and failed to stop for a flag man and flashing red lights, indicating a cane hauler was going to cross the road. Hankins said the car struck the right side of the cane hauler traveling north across Haleakala Highway at 8:46 p.m. yesterday.
An 82-year-old woman in the car driven by Anthony sustained serious injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
The three fatalities brought the number of traffic deaths to 23, compared with 19 on Maui for the same period last year.
