Musashimaru, Hayateumi
share two-way lead at 8-0
in Kyushu sumo tourney

FUKUOKA, Japan (AP) - Hawaiian-born yokozuna (grand champion) Musashimaru remained undefeated at 8-0 and shared a two-way lead with lower-ranked Hayateumi on Sunday, the eighth day of the 15-day Kyushu Grand Sumo tournament.

One victory behind the two leaders at 7-1 were sekiwake (junior champion) Tochiazuma - who is seeking a promotion to ozeki, sumo's second highest rank - and No. 10 maegashira (senior wrestler) Takanonami.

Wrestling at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center, Musashimaru, or Hawaiian-born Fiamalu Penitani, held off Tochinonada's driving attempts twice at the ring's edge before forcing out the No. 4 maegashira, who slipped to 4-4.

No. 7 maegashira Toki slapped down Tochiazuma to break a mid-ring deadlock for his sixth victory against two defeats.

Former ozeki Takanonami clamped No. 15 maegashira Tamarikido's arms and sent him out of the ring, leaving Tamarikido at 4-4.

No. 10 maegashira Hayateumi bulldozed out No. 9 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa. Kyokushuzan is 6-2.

In other major bouts, No. 4 maegashira Kotonowaka dispatched ozeki Musoyama from behind, leaving both wrestlers at 5-3.

Sekiwake Kotomitsuki downed No. 5 maegashira Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, with an arm throw to even his record 4-4. Kyokutenho is 5-3.

No. 3 maegashira Tokitsuumi fought off ozeki Kaio's arm throw attempt at ring's edge and pushed him out for his first victory against seven defeats. Kaio is 5-3.

Komusubi (junior champion second class) Asashoryu, or Mongolian Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, threw down equally ranked Kaiho for his fifth victory against three defeats. Kaiho is 4-4.

In the 26-member juryo division - below the senior makuuchi division - No.4 ranked Kuniazuma, or Brazilian Vander Ramos, slapped down No. 9-ranked Juzan for his fifth victory against three defeats. Juzan is 4-4.

No. 3-ranked Sentoryu, or American Henry Armstrong Miller, thrust out No. 8-ranked Towanoyama for his fourth victory against four defeats. Towanoyama is 5-3.
