1969: Star-Bulletin writer
tackles presidential power

IN its December issue, Civil Liberties magazine features an article by Paul Lovinger of the Star-Bulletin staff. Paul's subject is the power of the president to take the nation into war, the same subject on which he wrote three articles for the Bulletin a month ago. (Nov. 24, 1969) ... Out Kahala Hilton way, hundreds of hotel employees turned out with lei for new GM Dick Handl and departing Bob Burns. The most unusual lei given Burns was the "lei of a thousand cranes," made by the housekeeping department. The lei, made of hundreds of tiny paper birds, symbolizes long life and good luck. (Nov. 19, 1970) ...

MAKING IT: Al Michaels, who's flying in from Cincinnati to do the play-by-play of the Nebraska-UH debacle, is very much in demand these days. The "voice" of the Cincinnati Reds has been signed by ABC to handle a big bowling tournament, and the really big news is that NBC has hired Al to work side by side with Curt Gowdy in the Winter Olympics from Saporo, Janan. It's readily apparent that Al Michaels is going to be one of the best-known names in the sports broadcast field. (Nov. 24, 1971) ...

WHEN pals of publisher Carl Lindquist gathered yesterday aboard a boat in the Ala Wai to wish him a happy birthday, they attracted the attention of numerous commuters, joggers, dog walkers, golfers and lollygaggers along the way. Or more correctly, Lisa Lemona, an exotic from the Dunes who was along for the ride, did, unencumbered as she was by a top most of the trip. Link's cohorts try each year to top the previous year's birthday stunt, last year's being a show by Glade performers in the club -- a camptown doodah if there ever was one. (Nov. 20, 1973) ...

FORT DeRussy has a friend in Harry Walters, who is President Reagan's administrator of the Veterans Administration. Walters, a fullback on the great Army team that starred Pete Dawkins, drew a Schofield assignment after West Point, met his wife at Fort DeRussy and was married in the islands. Speaking at DeRussy last week, Walters said, "Those who would make this a private development -- shame on them!" (Nov. 19, 1984) ...

YOU may have read that Jerry Weintraub was named chairman and chief exec of United Artists Corp., but now, as Paul Harvey likes to say, you can hear the REST of the story. Weintraub was in Hawaii for several weeks while the film he's producing, "Karate Kid II," was being made here. Each morning, as is his custom, he went jogging. One day he happened to fall into step with another visiting Hollywood mogul, Kirk Kerkorian, whose Tracinda Corp. is the largest shareholder in United Artists. During the jog and in confabs afterward, the two decided to go into business together, and Weintraub is now acquiring the second-largest share of UA stock after Tracinda Corp. Maybe jogging pays after all. (Nov. 20, 1985) ...

JUST when you think all the clever ways of naming men's rooms and women's rooms are used up, along comes Dolly Parton, whose Dockside Plantation conveniences are labeled "Buoys" and "Gulls." Very nautical, but nice. (Nov. 24, 1987) ...

TALK show host Oprah Winfrey told her TV audience yesterday that she lost 67 pounds through a strict liquid diet and only went off it once in Hawaii. Oprah was six weeks into her diet when she visited Hawaii with her boyfriend and felt a dire need for junk food. "I became obsessed with having a cheeseburger," she said. "I said if I don't have a cheeseburger, I'm going to die." Well, Oprah had her cheeseburger but immediately felt guilty about it and went out and ran a mile, just to burn off the calories she knew she'd consumed. (Nov. 16, 1988) ...
