to practice

The UH forward was out for 2
weeks with an ankle sprain

Hawaii sophomore forward Phil Martin, cleared to practice after a two-week layoff with a sprained left ankle, was back on the basketball court yesterday.

"I'm glad to be back," Martin said after yesterday's workout at the Stan Sheriff Center. "It felt like a long time."

Martin sprained his left ankle after coming down on a teammate's foot during practice Oct. 29. He was in a cast for a week, a measure that trainer Melody Toth said helped with Martin's quick recovery; the original prognosis had Martin out for possibly another two weeks.

The 6-foot-7 Canadian had his left leg heavily taped yesterday but competed in the full practice, including all of the running drills. Toth said that if there was no sign of swelling today that Martin likely would be able to play in the Rainbows' opener Friday against Norfolk State in the Nike Tip-Off Tournament.

"We're glad to have him back," said Hawaii coach Riley Wallace.

Today was the first day of early letter-of-intent signings, but Wallace said he was not expecting to sign any recruit during this period.
