[ NFL ISLANDERS ]
A kicker's points add up, sometimes almost imperceptibly. Elams 14 points helps
Broncos win
By Nick Abramo
nabramo@starbulletin.comJason Elam, the former Hawaii kicker and nine-year NFL veteran, made another large contribution toward a Denver Broncos victory yesterday.
The Broncos won by 10 points, 26-16, and Elam had 14 of those, with four field goals and two extra points.
Elam's field goals were from 25, 28, 26 and 33 yards.
Jeff Ulbrich, 49ers: The starting linebacker (Hawaii) had another whopper of a game, making 10 tackles, including seven solo stops, in a 28-27 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Ulbrich's season totals rose to 43 tackles with 29 solos.
Chris Naeole, Saints: The starting guard (Kahuku High School/University of Colorado) and his linemates opened holes for Ricky Williams (121 yards rushing on 24 carries) and protected quarterback Aaron Brooks (347 yards passing), allowing just one sack in New Orleans' loss to San Francisco.
Olin Kreutz, Bears: The starting center (St. Louis School/University of Washington) and his teammates on the offensive line didn't allow a sack on quarterback Jim Miller, who passed for 201 yards in Chicago's 20-12 loss to the Green Bay Packers. But the Bears' running game stalled, as Anthony Thomas gained just 45 yards on 22 carries.
Mario Fatafehi, Cardinals: The backup defensive tackle (Farrington High School/Kansas State) made two tackles in Arizona's 17-10 loss to the New York Giants.
Kimo von Oelhoffen, Steelers: The starting defensive end (Molokai High School/Boise State) made one tackle in Pittsburgh's 15-12 overtime victory over the Cleveland Browns.
Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, Steelers: The backup running back (St. Louis School/University of Utah) caught one pass for minus-1 yard in Pittsburgh's win.
Dominic Raiola, Lions: The backup center (St. Louis School/University of Nebraska) played sparingly in Detroit's 20-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Itula Mili, Seahawks: The backup tight end subbed for starter Christian Fauria and played considerably in Seattle's 34-27 upset over the Oakland Raiders.
Not in action: Several players with Hawaii connections didn't play yesterday for various reasons.
Ma'a Tanuvasa (Mililani High School/Hawaii) of the San Diego Chargers and Adrian Klemm (Hawaii) of the New England Patriots are on injured reserve, and Kaulana Noa (Honoka'a High School/Hawaii) of the St. Louis Rams is on the inactive list, while Kynan Forney (Hawaii) of the Atlanta Falcons was active but didn't play.
