Artist Jean Tiffany Youngs Boone had an endless appreciation for nature and a love for the islands, said her daughter, Susan Wachter.

"She inspired us all," said Wachter, a fiber artist.

Boone, a painter of watercolors and pastels, died Oct. 29 at her home in Makawao, Maui. She was 83.

Boone was born on Oct. 12, 1918, in Hartford, Conn.

Boone came from a family of artists. Her father, Eugene Youngs, was an accomplished artist who studied with illustrator Howard Pyle. Her middle name came from Louis Comfort Tiffany of stained glass fame, a relative on her father's side.

Boone taught watercolor painting at the Honolulu YWCA, Bishop Museum Art School and the Waimea Arts Council. She established watercolor classes at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, where she taught for many years.

Boone's daughter, Andrea, said many of her students went on to teach art, as well.

Eight of her paintings were purchased by the state Foundation on the Culture and the Arts.

"They're really treasures," said friend Dodie Warren. "She was a sensitive interpreter of island scenes and loved to paint flowers."

Boone is survived by her husband, Dr. Edward Boone; daughters Susan Wachter of Olinda, Maui, Andrea Wilson of Santa Cruz, Calif., Diane Briery of Corvallis, Mont., and Carolyn Boone of Redwood City, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.

Private services were held. Scattering of ashes and burial of the urn will be private. Donations in Jean Boone's name may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, P.O. Box 4284, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
