Job and Health Fair set for those losing welfare

A Job and Health Fair will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Susannah Wesley Community Center in Kalihi for people who are losing their welfare benefits.

About 2,000 families in Hawaii will lose welfare benefits in the coming year, according to the state Department of Human Services.

For information on the fair, contact Joseph Wigfall of the Honolulu Community Action Program at 696-4261. The Wesley center is at 1117 Kaili Street.

Meetings on Big Island to address dengue fever outbreak concerns

The state's district health office on the Big Island is holding informational meetings tonight and tomorrow in response to community concerns about dengue fever.

The meetings will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the Keonepoko Elementary School Cafeteria and Pahoa Community Center, rooms 3 and 4. Tomorrow's meeting, at the same time, will be at the Nanawale Long House.

15-year-old boy charged in sex assault of girl, 13

Police charged a 15-year-old Honolulu boy for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in his Makiki apartment last month.

The boy was charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault after allegedly assaulting the girl twice on Oct. 29, first in the living room and then in the bathroom, before letting her leave, police said.

It is illegal to have sex with anyone under 14. Police said the suspect was intoxicated.

The boy remains in custody at Hale Hoomalu, the state's juvenile detention home.

High school classmate recognizes alleged thief

An apologetic 20-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of trying to break into of a high school classmate's truck.

A 20-year-old woman reported seeing the man trying to pry open a door lock with a screwdriver at 3 p.m. at Kailua Shopping Center. She recognized him as her classmate and another witness also recognized him as the boyfriend of an employee, police said.

The suspect reportedly apologized before fleeing the scene, but was later arrested when police stopped him for a traffic violation.

Mililani student arrested on suspicion of robbery

A 16-year-old Mililani High School student was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery after threatening a teacher's aide with a pencil and demanding money, police said.

The educational assistant, 25, reported that about a week ago the female student placed a pencil to his side and demanded all his money, police said.

The male teacher said no and sent her to the office. The student was arrested yesterday, police said.

Son, 25, arrested for threatening father

Charges are pending in a domestic case in which a 25-year-old man brawled with his 58-year-old father and threatened him with a pair of knives, police said.

The suspect, of Ewa Beach, was arrested yesterday in connection with terroristic threatening and abuse.

NEIGHBOR ISLANDS

Coast Guard rescues 6 from overturned canoe

WAILUKU >> Six people were rescued after their canoe overturned in high winds off South Maui.

A U.S. Coast Guard vessel retrieved the six adults from the water about 15 to 20 minutes after receiving a distress call at 8:55 a.m. Monday.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Tony Ochoa said the winds were blowing at 25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Five people were taken to shore aboard the vessel and one person on a sled of a watercraft driven by a county lifeguard.

The Coast Guard helped tow the canoe back to shore after it was righted, Ochoa said.

Police identify victim in accident on Kauai

LIHUE >> Kauai police have identified the man killed in a two-vehicle accident Friday evening on Kuhio Highway near Kealia as Paul Alvarado, 44, of Kapaa.

Police said a car driven by Alvarado was behind a northbound truck.

Alvarado attempted to pass the truck as the truck started a left turn.

His car sideswiped the truck, veered off the highway and hit a utility pole, officers said.

Man charged in stabbing of 69-year-old neighbor

LIHUE >> Mark E. Vargas, 47, of Kekaha has been charged with attempted murder in the stabbing of a 69-year-old neighbor Saturday, Kauai police said yesterday.

The victim remains in critical condition at Queen's Hospital on Oahu. Police said Vargas also is being held on outstanding arrest warrants from California, including an attempted-murder charge.

NORTH SHORE

Haleiwa sports bar brawl lands man in hospital

A barroom brawl landed a 36-year-old man in Wahiawa General Hospital yesterday with a broken shin and facial injuries.

Police said a fight between two acquaintances broke out just after midnight yesterday at Kainoa's Sports Bar & Restaurant at 66-197D Kamehameha Highway in the Haleiwa Shopping Plaza.

Police said the man broke his shin when he fell during the fight. He was treated at Wahiawa General.

Police arrested the other man, 34, for first-degree assault. He suffered a minor injury to his fist, police said.
