Schuler Homes Inc. said it plans to develop 380 new homes in Makakilo Heights.

Schuler Homes The company, one of Hawaii's largest homebuilders, recently obtained options on five land parcels on the Makakilo highlands from Finance Factors Ltd. where it will build single-family homes for first-time and step-up buyers.

Terms of the land deal were not disclosed.

"We're excited to be adding more community choices for customers in the Makakilo-Kapolei area," said Mike Jones, president of Schuler's Hawaii division.

"As Kapolei's business district continues to expand, it will be important to provide new homes that are close to the homebuyer's place of employment."

The acquisition is one of several completed during the past year by Schuler, which is in the process of merging with Texas-based residential developer D.R. Horton Inc.

The company said the deal underscores its continued commitment to the Hawaii market.

Schuler said it will begin site work in the spring and complete the first homes by summer.

The developer said the homes -- whose prices will average about $200,000 each -- range between 1,000 and 1,600 square feet and will feature views of the ocean and Diamond Head.

The new project, which has not been named, is located next to the company's 128-unit StarsEdge development on the Makakilo hillside.

So far, Schuler has delivered 28 homes at the StarsEdge project and sold another 39 units, according to Mary Flood, Schuler's vice president of sales and marketing.
