Legislator had unique
view from mission

If you ask state Rep. David Pendleton (R, Maunawili) about what he remembers most about the third special session of the state Legislature, he'll probably say it was a jungle out there.

Pendleton, also a pastor for his church, spent most of October on a three-week medical mission in Venezuela. He returned to Hawaii in time to attend only one day of the special session last Wednesday before falling ill.

The House minority floor leader recalled the mission required him to leave the capital city of Caracas for the jungle, where he was without TV, radio, telephone, and the Internet for days on end.

"There's a stretch -- about a 10-day period -- where we had no contact," he said.

"We were just helping people, and not knowing really what was going on in the world. I had no idea how the war was going, I had no idea that LeMahieu had resigned. All this stuff I learned about later on," said Pendleton, who believes the Legislature could have done a lot more this session.
