Pianist Parker returns

Internationally acclaimed pianist Jon Kimura Parker opens the Honolulu Symphony's first Saturday performance of the Masterworks season tomorrow night, performing Beethoven's celebrated Piano Concerto No. 4. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m., repeating at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

With his delicate fingerwork, Parker is known as a superb chamber musician and an atomic, furiously fast pianist whose turbo-charged energy brings audiences to their feet.

Parker last performed with the symphony in 1999, offering Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 plus a jazzy version of Danny Elfman's theme for "The Simpsons."

Parker has in recent seasons performed with The Philadelphia Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia, and the Deutsche Symphonie in the Philharmonie Berlin. He has also jammed with Doc Severinsen.

A Gold Medal winner at the 1984 Leeds International Piano Competition, Parker also was awarded his country's highest honor, the Order of Canada, in 1999.

Tickets to the performance are $15 to $55. Call 792-2000.
