Li hits the mark to win
girls state air riflery title

Sacred Hearts sophomore Shannon Li posted a score of 534 yesterday to win the Civilian Marksmanship Program girls state air riflery championship on the Big Island.

Punahou won its first team title with a total score of 2,037 in the competition held at Konawaena High School. Waiakea finished second with a score of 1,951.

Li recorded scores of 187 (prone), 166 (standing) and 181 (kneeling) to capture the title.

Punahou's Vicci Yau was second in the individual standings with a score of 527. She finished tied with teammate Kara Tellio, but won the tiebreaker which was based on their last 10 shots of the meet. Christen Kam (504) finished seventh for the Buffanblu, while Cheryl Kobayashi (479) came in 15th. The team is coached by Karen Finley.

Sacred Hearts, which won the first two state championships, didn't enter the team competition.

HPU volleyball team drops 3 spots in poll

The Hawaii-Pacific volleyball team fell three spots from No. 10 to No. 13 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 poll.

It's the first time the Sea Warriors (16-4, 10-3 PacWest) have been out of the top 10 since 1998, a string of 45 consecutive polls.

Brigham Young-Hawaii didn't make the Top 25, but received 26 points in the voting.

Hawaii Baptist wins girls ILH bowling crown

Hawaii Baptist clinched the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls bowling title last night with a 3-0 win over Maryknoll.

The Eagles and Spartans will represent the ILH in the state championships on Nov. 8-9 at Leeward Bowl.

Vulcans host Aloha Friday against MSU-Billings

It's Aloha Friday for Hawaii-Hilo as the Vulcans volleyball team hosts Montana State-Billings on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Anyone wearing Aloha attire will be admitted free. Regular ticket prices are $4 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. A tailgate party is scheduled for 5 p.m. with tickets going for $7 (adults), $5 (students) and $3 (12-and-under). The price of the tailgate event also includes a game ticket.

Tong grabs silver medal at Canada judo event

Amy Tong captured a silver medal in the 78kg weight class at the Canada Judo Championships in Montreal last weekend. Another Hawaii competitor, Taylor Takata, lost in the second round in the boys 60kg weight class.

Overall, the USA won four gold medals, four silver and 10 bronze, coming in behind Canada, which won 10 golds.
