READY TO SAIL

KEN SAKAMOTO / KSAKAMOTO@STARBULLETIN.COM
Hundreds of people gathered on the beach in Laie yesterday
for the launching of Brigham Young University-Hawaii's
canoe, which will be used as a floating classroom to teach
navigation skills. Under the supervision of two master
craftsmen, BYU students built the double-hulled canoe in
seven months. Measuring 57 feet long and 22 feet wide
with a 32-foot mast, this is only the second all-wood,
double-hulled canoe built in Hawaii. The canoe will be
officially dedicated Saturday.
