Campbell family donates over $700,000 to charities

The descendants of the late James Campbell donated $538,850 to the Aloha United Way yesterday, covering nearly half of AUW's projected shortfall of $1.2 million.

In a separate gift, The James & Abigail Campbell Foundation also donated $194,000 to five non-profit agencies.

The foundation granted $50,000 each to the Hawaii Foodbank Inc., the Institute for Human Services Inc. and the Salvation Army.

Child & Family Service and Helping Hands Hawaii were awarded $24,000 and $20,000, respectively.

"The quick and generous response of the Campbell family is truly overwhelming," said Irv Lauber, AUW president. "It is truly a gift from the heart. And it comes at a time when our safety net is being stretched to the limit."

Last week, the AUW, which funds 65 non-profit agencies statewide, announced it had extended its $13.6 million fund-raising campaign because of a projected shortfall.

New license plates pay tribute to Sept. 11 victims

Hawaii residents can display their patriotism with new vehicle license plates.

The "America United" license plate went on sale yesterday at satellite city halls around Oahu and at county motor vehicle offices on the Neighbor Islands, officials said. The plates feature a red, white and blue decal designed by graphic artist Daryl Soon that pays tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The text on the plate reads "America United, September 11, 2001."

Police chiefs across Hawaii approved the design for the special plates.

On Oahu, the plates will cost $5 when purchased during the regular renewal fee. Motorists who wish to buy the plates before their regular renewal date will have to pay the $5 fee plus an emblem replacement fee of 50 cents. Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Counties will set their own prices.

Support group for prostitutes will get new leader

Kelly Hill has stepped down as the executive director of Sisters Offering Support and will take on an advisory role at the nonprofit group she co-founded to help young women leave the sex industry and rebuild their lives.

Lorraine Faithful, the group's program director for the past two years, will succeed Hill.

Hill, who escaped prostitution herself before co-founding the group in 1995, will serve as the group's special adviser.

Earlier this year, Hill was instrumental in winning support for a new state law raising the age of sexual consent to 16 from 14, then the lowest in the nation. The controversial bill won passage after lawmakers overrode a veto by Gov. Ben Cayetano.

In November, Hill was named "America's Best Young Community Leader" by Do Something, an organization that promotes community activism among young people.

Hill said she had stepped aside as executive director to "allow the organization to develop a new generation of leadership."

Hill also announced that Tom Brower, formerly with The Ronald McDonald House, has joined the SOS staff as fund development director.
