Wahine schedule exhibition
against Tall Pines

The Hawaii women's basketball team will play the New Zealand Tall Pines in an exhibition game Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

It has been several years since the Wahine last had the opportunity to play an exhibition game against a traveling opponent prior to opening their non-conference schedule.

"It will serve the purpose of breaking the ice for our new players," said UH coach Vince Goo. "We would have scrimmaged ourselves that day."

The Tall Pines are a club team but will be augmented by several players from the New Zealand National Team.

Former Wahine Tania Brunton-Tupu, a member of the New Zealand Olympic Team, won't make the trip.

"We talked with Tania last week. She wanted to come, but can't get off work. She is working in a gem store and taking classes to become certified," said Goo.

Ticket prices for the exhibition will be announced shortly. The game is not part of the season-ticket package.

Season tickets are on sale now at the Stan Sheriff Center box office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays, or by calling 944-2697. The deadline for mail renewals and new ticket sales is Nov. 9.

Season ticket prices are $75 for adults, $60 for seniors, $40 for children ages 4-17.

Waimanalo gets boxing ring gift

Bishaw's Academy of Tae Kwon Do donated a new, state-of-the-art, 20-foot regulation boxing ring to the Waimanalo Recreation Center, according to academy instructor Sam Bishaw.

The new boxing ring replaces the old ring now at the center, which Bishaw says is deteriorating and unsafe for the youth boxers who train there.

Bishaw says the new boxing ring is valued at $10,000.

"We have a great deal of interest in helping children develop their character mentally, physically and spiritually and in building their self-esteem and confidence," Bishaw said. "The boxing ring should bring in the kids to the recreation center and keep them off the street and out of trouble."

A dedication ceremony will be held at the Waimanalo Recreation Center on Saturday at 4 p.m., with its first-ever junior boxing match to follow.

Boise State, Nittaidai volleyball match canceled

The Boise State vs. Nittaidai women's volleyball match, originally scheduled for this Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center, has been canceled.

The Nittaidai team has decided to not travel to Hawaii.

There will be no makeup match. The Hawaii vs. Nevada match is still on for Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
