motorcycle accident

It's unknown whether the safety
will play against Fresno State

Hawaii senior starting safety Nate Jackson was being treated in the emergency room at The Queen's Medical Center yesterday afternoon because of a traffic accident.

He suffered what a witness said was a deep abrasion to his lower left leg after Jackson, riding his motorcycle, collided with a car on University Avenue near Varsity Place.

No other information was immediately available on Jackson's condition, but the witness said Jackson was conscious after the accident.

"He was OK, just his leg did not look very good at all. A lot of skin was lost off his left leg," said Robby Acoba, owner of the nearby Eastside Grill.

Acoba said it did not appear that alcohol or speed were factors in the accident at the busy intersection, and that the accident did not seem to be Jackson's fault.

"He was just trying to avoid a car and got hit," Acoba said.

Warriors' trainer Eric Okasaki said last night he had talked with Jackson after the accident and he sounded OK, but Okasaki did not have information about Jackson's injury, or when he would be available to play football again.

Hawaii (4-2, 3-2 WAC) hosts Fresno State (6-1, 2-1) on Friday at Aloha Stadium.

UH senior slotback Craig Stutzmann arrived after police and emergency personnel had responded around 2:30 p.m.

"He seemed all right, but I got there at the end. He had a bandage on his lower leg. If he was sitting down and you didn't see it, you wouldn't know anything was wrong," Stutzmann said.

Jackson was a second-team All-WAC selection after leading UH with seven interceptions. He finished second on the team with 112 tackles. The 5-foot-10, 168-pound Jackson was named UH's co-Most Inspirational Player.

He's tied for fourth this season in team tackles with 36.

If Jackson can't play, Robert Grant would probably replace him in the starting lineup. Grant also has 36 tackles, and has intercepted a team-leading two passes.

Jackson, who was an all-state selection at Waianae High School, is a fourth-year starter. He has 240 career tackles at UH. He also plays outfield for the Rainbows baseball team.
