Kahuku, Castle
finish 1-2 in Red

Oahu Interscholastic Association football fans were treated to two nights of homecoming pageantry and remarkable performances on the next to last weekend of the regular season.

Among the weekend's highlights:

>> Kahuku captured the OIA Red Conference championship with a 54-14 win over Campbell. The defending state champion Red Raiders will be the top seed in the OIA playoffs.

>> Castle clinched second in the conference with a 36-29 comeback victory over Kailua on Friday before an overflow crowd in Kaneohe. The Knights trailed 17-3 before storming back to beat their Windward Oahu neighbors.

>> Aiea quarterback Lole Laolagi tossed four touchdown passes against Kaiser to set an OIA single-season record. Laolagi has 28 touchdown passes, breaking the record of 27 set last year by Kaiser's B.J. Bernard.

Aiea's 34-21 win and Roosevelt's 43-7 victory over Moanalua set up a showdown between Na Alii and the Rough Riders on Thursday at Aloha Stadium. A Roosevelt win would create a three-way tie for the conference championship with Waipahu. The Marauders finished the season 7-1 after beating Pearl City, 47-7.

>> Waialua survived a 42-35 shootout with Kalani to notch its first win since Sept. 10, 1999.

The OIA completes the regular season this weekend with the games postponed following the Sept. 11 attacks. In addition to the Aiea-Roosevelt matchup, Kahuku takes on Waianae on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Waianae recovered from a slow start to clinch a playoff berth Friday with a 27-7 win over Mililani.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu's contests went according to expectations as Iolani, St. Louis and Kamehameha posted blowout wins.

This week's schedule features the much-anticipated meeting between St. Louis and Damien. Damien's controversial plan to forfeit the game last summer led to this season's divisional format in the ILH. That game will be followed by a key battle between Iolani and Kamehameha.

Both games are scheduled for Friday at Kaiser.

On Maui, Baldwin scored two defensive touchdowns as the Bears handed Lahainaluna its first loss of the Maui Interscholastic League season. Baldwin, 2-0 in the MIL's second round, faces arch-rival Maui on Saturday.

Konawaena beat Kealakehe, 14-7, on Friday in a battle of West Hawaii powers. Kealakehe must recover quickly as the Waveriders travel to Hilo this week to take on Waiakea, another contender for the Big Island Interscholastic Federation championship.

Waimea continued its roll toward another Kauai Interscholastic Federation title with a 42-0 win over Kapaa at Vidinha Stadium. The Menehunes face Kauai on Friday.

Saturday game

Farrington 22, Leilehua 20: Royce Machado passed for 306 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Governors to their first OIA Red Conference win of the season.

Machado connected with Chad Mock on three of his scoring passes. The fourth went to Yeoland Tamapua, who caught four passes for 130 yards.

Farrington completed its season with a 1-6-1 regular season record. Leilehua closes the season Friday against Castle.
