Edmonds pleads not guilty in Bustamante killing

A former Kaneohe Marine accused of murdering a 13-year-old Kailua girl 26 years ago pleaded not guilty today in Circuit Court.

Trial for Delmar Edmonds, who was extradited here from Indiana Thursday, was set for Dec. 10 before Circuit Judge Marie Milks.

Edmonds faces life with parole or 20 years imprisonment if convicted of second-degree murder in the slaying of Dawn "Dede" Bustamante on March 14, 1975.

Bustamante and a friend were walking in Kailua early that day when they were abducted at gunpoint by an unknown male and taken to a secluded area near the Pali Golf Course. Bustamante was raped and shot in the head after she tried to escape. The other girl escaped.

Edmonds was questioned as a suspect then but it wasn't until recently when fellow Marines spoke to police about their suspicions that he was charged.

The grants are the first to be awarded though the Labor Department's new office of Disability Employment Policy.
