Flying the ‘walk and talk’

National syndicated talk show host Bruce Williams has put his syndicators' money, and more, where his mouth is.

The Talk America Radio Network host broadcast his show from Hawaii last week as part of his effort to prove that air travel in America is still safe.

"After giving all my listeners my opinion on this subject, I felt I had an obligation and a duty to put my rear end where my mouth is, so to speak," he said.

Said posterior extremity had been transported more than 25,000 miles before the Hawaii leg of his aerial sojourn aboard Continental Airlines. The other partner for the series of broadcasts is Hyatt Hotels, and the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa was from whence the broadcast originated.

"There is absolutely nothing to fear," he said, and repeatedly referred to the beauty of the islands on the air. The show from the Hyatt was beamed live to the mainland from 1 to 4 p.m., but was aired locally in its usual 4 to 7 p.m. timeslot on KWAI (1080 AM).

Big change in biz show

The annual Small Business Hawaii show has been moved -- not just in venue as Small Business Hawaii members already know -- but in date.

Rescheduled to Jan. 11 and 12 at the Kapalama Military Reservation, the event has been renamed the Small Business Hawaii Industrial Fair.

The state Harbors Division "needed space for certain cargo backlogs that resulted from September 11," according to producer Mike Rossell. Additionally, what he called "a distinct pause in business activity" necessitated more time to make sure the event would be as large-scale as envisioned.

The high-tech focus of previous shows has shifted -- the featured stars will be forklifts, backhoes, trucks, tractors and construction machines, according to Rossell, president of Production Hawaii Inc.

An event highlight is sure to be the State Championship Forklift and Backhoe Operation competition, but it isn't without a softer side -- an "industrial fashion show" is also on the agenda.
