Tale of Kamehameha named
Hawai‘i book of the year

Hawai'i's best books, authors, book designers and book artists were honored Friday at the 11th annual Ka Palapala Po'okela awards.

The awards from the Hawai'i Book Publishers Association are determined by the Hawai'i Book Academy, including librarians, booksellers, the media, publishers and dedicated book lovers.

Eighty-one nominees were considered for 18 awards for the year 2000.

The Samuel Manaiakalani Kamakau Award for "Best Hawai'i Book of the Year" was presented to "Kamehameha and His Warrior Kekuhaupi'o," written by Stephen L. Desha and translated by Frances N. Frazier.

The John Dominis Holt Award, given to an individual for an extended record of excellence in publishing was awarded to prolific author and columnist Bob Krauss.

A special award was given for the first time: "Aloha from Beyond Hawai'i," for books published outside of the state but about Hawaii. Recipient was "The Aloha Shirt."
