Town meet will discuss effect of trauma on kids
"Tough Times and Scary News," a town meeting concerning trauma and its effect on children and adolescents, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Mid-Pacific Conference Center, Hilton Hawaiian Village.The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is sponsoring the free forum to let concerned parents and teachers share experiences from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and their impact on the mental state of children and adolescents.
Child and adolescent psychiatrists will offer guidelines on the best way to explain death and terrorism to young children and direct a dialogue between the public and private agencies concerning the tragedy.

Maui to collect trash free to fight dengue fever
WAILUKU >> Maui County officials will be picking up bulky items at no charge in Haiku and Lahaina in an effort to remove trash that may collect rainwater and serve as breeding areas for mosquitoes.Eradicating the insects is part of the state's effort to control the spread of mosquito-borne dengue fever.
Crews will pick up the large items in the vicinity of Ulumalu Road in Haiku on Saturday and at Ainakea Street and nearby Nahale Place, Kekai Road and streets such as Kahoma, Kuuipo and Malo in Lahaina on Oct. 26.
Residents are asked to bring their items to the curb in Haiku by 7:30 a.m. and in Lahaina by 5:30 a.m.
The trash pickup is part of the Community Work Day Program. Maui residents who wish to have large items removed from their properties are asked to call 877-2524.
Security increases at municipal facilities
As security concerns increase at public events, backpacks, brief cases, large handbags, diaper bags, totes, coolers and other containers will be subject to search at the Blaisdell Center and Waikiki Shell, the city said.People without large items may use separate express entrances.

Officers arrest juvenile in attack on woman Police arrested a 14-year-old boy Wednesday night for allegedly attacking a 57-year-old woman in Makakilo and are looking into whether he may be responsible for a similar attack the night before. In Wednesday's attack, police said the boy followed the woman on several streets through Makakilo as the woman was walking home just before 8 p.m. Police said the boy then jumped on the woman, knocking her to the ground and began choking her.
A witness who heard the woman's screams scared the suspect away. Police said they know the boy and found him in a Makakilo townhouse. They arrested him for kidnapping. In Tuesday's attack, a 22-year-old woman was also walking home in Makakilo around 9 p.m. when a suspect who had been following her grabbed her from behind. Police said the suspect tried to sexually assault the woman.

Police seek assistance in identifying suspect
Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man who robbed a 29-year-old woman near City Bank in Kapahulu on September 23. The woman told police the man asked her for a ride because his bicycle had a flat tire. She said she drove the man to 2409 Bingham St. After he took his bicycle out of the woman's vehicle, police said the man grabbed the woman's purse, punched her and threatened to hurt her baby sleeping in the back seat.Police said the man then fled on his bicycle toward University Avenue. The robber is believed to be between 18 and 20 years old, 5-foot-6 and 140 pounds. He has black, crew cut hair and a tan complexion. He was wearing a white short-sleeve T-shirt and blue denim cargo pants.
Motorcyclist critical after crash on Nimitz
A 27-year-old Pearl City man is in critical condition at Queen's Medical Center after crashing his motorcycle on Nimitz Highway last night.Police said the man was traveling Ewa-bound on Nimitz about 9:30 p.m. when he lost control of his motorcycle and was thrown from it near City Mill. Police said the man was wearing a helmet. They said they believe speed and alcohol were factors in the accident.
Baby's skull fracture cause for investigation
Police opened an assault investigation yesterday after officials at Kapiolani Medical Center discovered a 10-month-old girl had a skull fracture.Police said the baby was taken to the hospital because of a lump over her right ear. X-rays revealed she had a fracture on the right side of her skull. No arrests have been made.

Big Isle woman held in shooting of ex-spouse
HILO >> Police are holding a 50-year-old Hilo woman for attempted murder in the shooting yesterday of her 51-year-old ex-husband.The victim remained in critical condition at Hilo Medical Center following the 5:14 a.m. shooting in the Keaukaha area of Hilo, police said.
After the victim was shot in the abdomen, he walked to a nearby house and asked the occupants to call an ambulance, which then took him to the hospital, police said.
Capt. James Day said a handgun was used in the shooting, but he declined to give its caliber.
The motive for the shooting was under investigation, Day said.
