featured at a fashion show tomorrow.

Sweet surprises at fashion show

Designs by Mikel and Celia Kilgour of Kilgour & Sweet -- L.A. will highlight Hui Makaala Association's 32nd annual fund-raiser/luncheon at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom. tomorrow.

Mikel Kilgour is known for his menswear, recently featured in last year's Academy Award-winning film, "Traffic"

Celia Sweet is known for her fitted, architectural designs, echoing her love for fashion of the 1930s through '50s.

The two designers met in the summer of 1982, and, intrigued by the yin and yang of their work, they formed a partnership, opening their first boutique in New Jersey in 1984.

In 1995, Mikel was invited to create styles for Dion Scott of Beverly Hills. The well-received collection won fans such as Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Boyz II Men, Will Smith and others. A women's collection by Kilgour and Sweet soon followed.

Most recently, Mikel has written a film about an African-American fashion designer that will star and be produced by Blair Underwood.

Boutique sales for the Hui Makaala show starts at 9 a.m. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., followed by a noon lunch and the fashion show at 1 p.m., also featuring garments by Tori Richard, Cinnamon Girl and Chizuken.

Spotlight is on Portlock homes

Portlock Road winds its way onto TV at 10:30 p.m. tonight in an episode of Home & Garden's "Dream Drives."

Tia Marlier, host of the show, opens one of Hawaii's elegant residential areas to the nation.

Viewers will first catch a glimpse of Hailuen and Jim Leavitt's Mediterranean-style home that has a front view seating for magnificent sunsets.

Then, a visit to Helen Godwin's home that has a stream running though it.

The last two stops focus on nature. Bob and Christa Wells incorporated a floral theme into the creation of their new home and Ramsay and Norm Goldstein give a tour of their "Hawaiian Eden" garden.

Student rate offered for 'Ballet Stars' show

The Ballet Hawaii Angel Fund is offering student rush tickets for tomorrow's "Ballet Stars from San Francisco" production, taking place at 8 p.m. at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

The concert features principal dancers from the San Francisco Ballet and marks a homecoming for Amanda Schull (see a profile of the dancer in today's Star Weekend section).

All students, as well as members of the Hawaii State Dance Council, may purchase tickets for $15, space available, beginning at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Blaisdell Box Office and all TicketPlus outlets. One ticket is allowed per current student ID (high school and college), with no identification required for elementary and intermediate age students.

Regularly-priced tickets for the 7:30 p.m. performance are $35 to $55. Call 526-4400 to charge tickets.
