[PET OHANA]

HAWAIIAN HUMANE SOCIETY
Dogs wore red bandannas during Love A Dog month last
year at Tamarind Park, while volunteers answered questions
about adopting and caring for dogs. This year's walk takes
place noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 26.

Striving to keep people
and dogs together

By Hawaiian Humane Society

Promoting the human-animal bond means that the staff at the Hawaiian Humane Society does whatever it takes to keep people and their animals together. Sadly, most pets are surrendered because the human-animal bond never fully developed, or failed because of behavior, health, cost or time.

During Love-A-Dog Month this month, the focus is on adopting and providing identification for canines. If you're going to add to your family, our adoption counselors provide a preview of what to expect from the dog in the future. Families are encouraged to become familiar with shelter pets, spending quality time together in acquaintance areas while they bond. The Humane Society also helps ensure future harmony by offering brochures on training and behavior issues.

Along with your new four-legged friend, you'll get extra goodies like:

>> One month's free heartworm preventative (Heartgard, Sentinel or

Revolution) from your veterinarian.

>> A certificate for one free dog bath and brush at Dogpatch Academy.

>> A bag of toys and biscuits from Ralston Purina.

>> A bag of food from Nutro.

All dogs adopted from the Hawaiian Humane Society are sterilized and given a first vaccination, free microchip ID and a certificate from the Honolulu Veterinary Society for a free visit at one of the participating clinics.

Here are two Love-A-Dog Month events:

>> Dog walk downtown: Staff and volunteers from the Hawaiian Humane Society will show off some of the dogs available for adoption from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 26 at Bishop Square's Tamarind Park.

>> Go hiking: Canines and their human companions explore Oahu's trails on the last Saturday of each month. Hike Maunawili Gulch Trail at 8:45 a.m. Oct. 27. Call 946-2187, ext. 217, for details, or check the Web site www.hawaiianhumane.org.
